Vibrant and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems don’t just happen—they are engineered through years of deliberate planning, collaboration, and a shared mission. In Dayton, Ohio, that long-term approach has created an entrepreneurial ecosystem that has become one of America’s most resilient regional innovation ecosystems.
At Entrepreneurs’ Center, we’ve spent more than a decade intentionally building the Dayton entrepreneurial ecosystem, connecting founders, investors, mentors, educators, policymakers, and mission-driven organizations to accelerate innovation, strengthen national competitiveness, and create lasting economic growth. Together, we harness the region’s unparalleled aerospace and national defense heritage to drive breakthrough innovation while ensuring long-term strategic resilience, technological superiority, and inclusive growth.
As communities across the country look for ways to strengthen innovation and economic competitiveness, Dayton offers a model built on long-term collaboration, shared infrastructure, and a commitment to supporting entrepreneurs.
So what core elements have we engineered into the Dayton entrepreneurial ecosystem?
Developing World-Class Entrepreneurial Talent
Our foundation is rooted in world-class talent development and entrepreneurial identification. Dayton’s deep aerospace and defense DNA gives us a decisive edge.
We partner closely with the University of Dayton’s Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Sinclair Community College, Wright State University, and other institutions to identify and cultivate the next generation of defense-tech and aerospace entrepreneurs. Through programs like Flyer Nest at the University of Dayton, students gain hands-on access to cutting-edge technologies—from advanced materials and propulsion systems to autonomous systems and sensor technologies—that serve as launchpads for new ventures.
In just two short years, University of Dayton students have launched multiple companies, several of which have already secured significant funding. Our higher education partners embed rigorous entrepreneurship curricula focused on dual-use innovation, digital engineering, cybersecurity, and sustainable mission-critical solutions, producing entrepreneurs ready to meet national security challenges and global competition.
Building the Dayton Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
Collaboration and shared infrastructure are mission-critical. Innovation hubs provide the shared spaces where collaboration happens every day.
The Arcade Innovation Hub, developed by Entrepreneurs’ Center in partnership with the University of Dayton, now supports more than 200 small businesses and startups. It deliberately brings together seasoned defense contractors, emerging aerospace founders, students, and community leaders to accelerate ventures across commercial and national security markets.
The onMain Innovation Hub drives digital transformation for aerospace applications, while the expanding Digital Transformation Center—with a major new facility underway at the historic fairgrounds—is rapidly scaling companies focused on AI, data analytics, and resilient systems. Few regions in America can match Dayton’s concentration of aerospace, aviation, and defense resources.
How the Dayton Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Expands Access to Capital
Breakthrough ideas attract investment—especially when they align with national priorities.
Dayton’s entrepreneurial ecosystem doesn’t rely solely on traditional venture capital. We combine active angel investors, corporate innovation arms from major defense primes, and strategic capital partners with robust utilization of federal programs like the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) initiatives.
Nearly half of Ohio’s government research contracts flow to the Dayton region thanks to the presence of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). This steady stream of mission-aligned research and development funding fuels dual-use technologies that strengthen both national defense and commercial markets.
Strengthening Innovation Through Public-Private Partnerships
Government and policy partners provide essential strategic support. We collaborate closely with the State of Ohio, the City of Dayton, and regional municipalities to streamline acquisition processes, reduce barriers for small businesses, and align policy with the needs of aerospace and defense innovators.
Together, we’ve channeled millions of dollars in targeted support to entrepreneurs, ensuring broader participation while accelerating technologies that are vital to American competitiveness and national security.
Why the Dayton Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Works
Sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems do more than launch startups. They create enduring economic value, strengthen technological resilience against global disruptions, and reinforce America’s competitive advantage.
By building on Dayton’s historic aerospace legacy—the birthplace of aviation and a cornerstone of American air power—we’ve created a mission-focused innovation ecosystem designed to meet today’s challenges while preparing for tomorrow’s opportunities.
Dayton is not just participating in the economy of the future; we are engineering it with the same ingenuity and determination that defined the Wright brothers and continues today at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
This is The Dayton Way—where innovation meets national purpose.
