Chris Yancey, founder and CEO of PermaEdge Industries, has dedicated over 30 years to the hardscape and outdoor living industry. Throughout his career as a designer and builder, he encountered a persistent problem in the field: traditional paver edging was failing prematurely, often leading to unsightly and unstable installations. “The same methods and materials had been used for decades, and it was clear they just weren’t built to last,” Chris explains.
With this in mind, Chris set out to develop a new solution—one that would not only be more durable but would also ensure long-lasting stability for paver patios, driveways, and walkways.
In 2016, PermaEdge Industries was born with a mission to revolutionize paver edging. Chris collaborated with engineers to create an innovative product known as PermaEdge, a stabilized edging compound designed to secure pavers effectively and withstand the elements. Unlike traditional plastic or aluminum edging, PermaEdge uses a fortified mixture that hardens to create a stable border around pavers. This compound binds directly to the pavers and underlying base, forming a solid yet flexible support system that resists movement, shifting, and cracking over time.
The team began testing the product’s formula and application methods in a garage. By carefully refining the mix to withstand temperature changes, heavy foot traffic, and natural wear, they were able to create a durable product that set a new standard in the industry. Just one year later, PermaEdge sold its first batch, and with that, the company embarked on its journey to becoming a staple in the hardscape industry. Since then, PermaEdge has provided contractors across the US and Canada with a reliable, innovative solution that elevates their outdoor installations and offers clients long-lasting results they can trust.
Like many founders, Chris faced obstacles along the way, particularly with financing. “I quickly realized that this type of business would need more capital than I had anticipated, especially to cover marketing,” he shares.
By reaching out to angel investors, Chris secured small loans that helped stabilize the company in its early stages. Marketing was another challenge, but by leveraging social media—particularly Instagram, where contractors frequently showcase their work—PermaEdge connected with industry professionals who shared the product on their projects, building a loyal customer base. “Without the support of hardscape contractors around the country, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Chris says gratefully.
Today, PermaEdge is focused on expanding its market reach and refining its product to keep up with growing competition. “Our biggest challenge is staying ahead of ‘copy-cat’ products,” Chris notes.
As major companies have started to introduce similar products, PermaEdge remains committed to maintaining superior quality, though the competitive landscape has led to some market share losses due to lower-priced alternatives. In response, Chris is excited to announce a new product launch in 2025 that promises to be more affordable, easier to ship, and just as durable, helping PermaEdge stay a step ahead.
The support of the Entrepreneurs’ Center (EC) has been instrumental in PermaEdge’s journey. Chris attributes much of the company’s success to the guidance he received from EC, including lessons on pitching to investors, obtaining a patent, and strengthening marketing efforts.
“The EC has been with us every step of the way. I honestly don’t think PermaEdge would be where it is today without them,” Chris reflects. For anyone considering applying to be an EC client, he urges, “Don’t wait another minute. The resources are invaluable, and there are so many great people who invest in entrepreneurs here in Dayton.”
As he looks ahead, Chris envisions scaling PermaEdge’s market presence tenfold. With strategic product improvements, optimized pricing, and expanded shipping options, he’s confident the brand will continue growing and impacting the hardscape industry. “I hope to grow our market and potentially sell the business in the next five years,” he shares, expressing his commitment to bringing high-quality, reliable solutions to contractors nationwide. Through dedication and innovation, PermaEdge Industries is reshaping what hardscape products can achieve.
