Partnership between UD and TEC bolsters top-ranked pitch competition for entrepreneurship students around the globe

Dayton, March 28, 2018: The Entrepreneurs Center (TEC) announced today that TEC President, Scott Koorndyk, was honored last night at the University of Dayton’s (UD) annual entrepreneurship banquet with the L. William Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership’s Volunteer of the Year award. The award is reserved for individuals who have given time and energy to advance the Crotty Center’s distinctive, multidisciplinary approach to university entrepreneurship education with the goal of instilling remarkable students with the education, courage, and conviction to start new companies.

“Scott has given so much to the Crotty Center, and our students,” said Crotty Center Director and Fifth Third Bank Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Vince Lewis. “He provides real-world experience and guidance to several UD interns, he served as a judge in our Flyer Pitch competition, and was instrumental in launching a joint venture allowing The Entrepreneurs Center’s Entrepreneurial Services Program (ESP) to double the impact of the Flyer Pitch prize money of $25,000 by matching it in ESP support. This will have a tremendous impact on turning these budding entrepreneurs into viable, scalable businesses owners in our region.”

This year’s Flyer Pitch winner, also announced last night, was Edge Cycling Technologies. The company was founded by physical therapist and UD graduate Shane Page ( DPT ’10) and Wright State University graduate John Massengale (MBA ’09). Mr. Massengale visited Dr. Page’s physical therapy office for pain caused by his cycling hobby. The two combined their knowledge of anatomy and business respectively to found Edge Cycling Technologies and develop the PhysioSaddle, a revolutionary bike seat designed to eliminate pain from cycling. As a result of their win, Edge Cycling Technologies will have the opportunity to join the ESP program through The Entrepreneurs Center.

“Being named Volunteer of the Year was a great surprise and a true honor,” said Mr. Koorndyk, “but the real winners are all the UD entrepreneurship students. We saw so many innovative ideas, pitches, and micro- businesses this year; Vince and the Crotty Center should be very proud of the work their students are doing. And the TEC team is thrilled to include Edge Cycling Technologies in our programming; exciting things will come from this team and the other Flyer Pitch finalists.”
